Common Electrical Problems in Vehicles

Depending on your knowledge of automobiles you may or may not be surprised to learn that your vehicle does not only run on gasoline but it also uses air and, perhaps more surprisingly, electricity. And no, we are not talking about hybrids. Internal combustion powered vehicles utilize electricity for numerous things, including the starting system, powering accessories and making the engine run. In fact, electricity is responsible for many different important functions of your car. Like any vehicle system, the electrical system can run into trouble. The following are some of the most common electrical issues and the vehicle problems they will cause.

Dead Battery

Perhaps the most common problem with the electrical system would be a dead battery. The battery is responsible for many functions of the electrical system. This includes providing the initial charge that is required to get the car started. The battery can die for numerous reasons, including things as simple as leaving the lights on when your vehicle is off. In most cases you just need to jump start the vehicle in order to recharge the battery. But they do wear out over time and need to be replaced every few years.

Bad Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires

Part of the electrical system that is very integral to the way that your car runs is the spark plugs and spark plug wires. The spark plugs are fed and electrical charge that ignites the air and fuel mixture that your engine utilizes in order to create the power that pumps the pistons. If the spark plugs become corroded or dirty they will misfire, causing the engine to run rough and drain your fuel efficiency.

Blown Fuse

If a certain system in your car, such as the power windows, the radio, the headlights or anything else for that matter that works on its own suddenly goes dead it is likely caused by a blown fuse. Fuses are what distribute the correct amount of electrical power to certain systems, and if they go bad, or blow, as it is know, the particular system it provides power too will no longer work. Luckily this is a cheap and simple fix!

Failed Alternator

The alternator is what creates the electricity in your vehicle. It is connected to the timing belt and the spinning motion of the engine produces power in the alternator which is been stored in the battery. Should the alternator go bad it will no longer be able to create electricity. This will result in the battery being quickly drained of its power, meaning your car will likely not start the next time you try.

The electrical system in your car can cause numerous issues in regard to the way your car runs and drives. If you need auto electrical repair in Lake City visit Clayton Auto Service.
