4 Signs it's Time for Suspension Repair
People aren't wrong when they associate the suspension system with ride comfort, but it does much more than that. The shocks, struts and other components of the suspension are tasked with keeping all four wheels on the ground at any given time, ensuring adequate braking power at all times. It also prevents your vehicle from rolling over while cornering. Should you ever experience any of these signs of suspension trouble be sure to get your car to a repair shop so that it remains comfortable and safe to drive.
One corner of the car seems low
Another obvious sign that the suspension needs help is if one corner of your vehicle appears to be sunk, yet the tire is properly inflated. This generally signifies that the shocks or struts have failed and no need to be replaced.
Oil on the struts
One way to tell if the struts are unable to do their job is if you notice that they're (or just one of them) is covered in an oily substance. This oil is suppose to be inside the strut, and it should it leak from the casing view a faulty seal or a crack, the strut will be unable to properly absorb the uneven surfaces of the road. This will lead to a very uncomfortable cruise.
If you believe that your car is bouncing around a little too much due to failing suspension there is an easy way to test your hypothesis. Simply push on the hood or the trunk of the vehicle to get it bouncing. If it does not return to its normal ride height after 3 to 4 bounces then there are parts that likely need to be replaced to restore proper operation.
Rollover feeling during cornering
The scariest symptom that something is amiss with the suspension is the feeling that your vehicle is going to roll over or otherwise lose control as you go around a corner. This will happen if the anti-sway bar can no longer properly do its job. This component of the suspension system shifts the vehicle's center of gravity while cornering, thus keeping all four wheels on the road throughout the curve.
The suspension is very important in regard to comfort, but it is an even more important part of your vehicle's safety system.
