Colored Exhaust Smoke: Engine Trouble Ahead
There are many ways to tell if your vehicle is having trouble, whether it's a dashboard indicator light, a weird shaking sensation, strange noises or perhaps a visual clue. Because your senses are able to detect potential issues with your vehicle's various systems it is always important to pay attention to what your car maybe trying to tell you. One of the most common signs of engine trouble is increased exhaust smoke. Depending on the color of the smoke you can create a general diagnosis of what may be the problem. These are the three most common colors of exhaust smoke you will encounter and what they probably mean in regards to engine damage.
Black exhaust smoke
If your vehicle is spewing black exhaust it means that the motor is burning excessive amounts of gasoline. This can be caused by several issues but most notably it is due to a leaking fuel injection system. However another common problem is a very simple fix. If the air filter becomes clogged it will deny the engine of the correct air/fuel mixture it needs to properly operate. Since there is a decrease in airflow the motor will compensate by burning additional gasoline. This is not only going to wreak havoc on your miles per gallon it could cause additional problems inside the motor due to increased operating temperatures. Be sure to visit an auto repair shop as soon as possible to have this issue resolved.
White exhaust smoke
Puffy white clouds of exhaust smoke generally indicate a cooling system leak because when you burn anti-freeze it produces white smoke. If your engine is leaking coolant into the combustion chamber it means that there is some sort of crack in the cooling system. This puts your car at risk of overheating which can lead to numerous other problems for your engine, such as a blown head gasket. Cooling system leaks will often times be accompanied by a very sweet smell.
Blue exhaust smoke
Oil is the lifeblood of the engine, without it, it will quickly seize up due to harsh friction between the moving parts that are inside of it. For this reason it is important to head to the auto repair shop if you notice your vehicle producing blue exhaust smoke. Oil burns blue so this means that there is an oil leak inside the motor that is allowing the oil to be burnt up in the combustion chamber. These types of leaks are generally pretty bad and need immediate repair.
