What is leaking from my car?

What is leaking from my car?Modern vehicles are some of the most sophisticated machines to have ever been built, but they can still develop problems. Your car or truck depends on a variety of specialized fluids to operate it systems. However, without proper maintenance, these systems can fail, resulting in leaks. The following are the most common leaks found on vehicles today.

Brake Fluid

Your car's braking system is hydraulically assisted. When you press on the brake pedal, brake fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir rushes through the brake lines to expand the brake pads against the brake drums or rotors, depending on your specific vehicle. Brake fluid, a clearish brown liquid, will most likely leak from the brake master cylinder or from one of the wheel cylinders. Do not drive your car if you suspect a brake fluid leak.

Engine Oil

Oil is generally noted as being thick and black after some use. Oil leaks are perhaps the most common type of leak for a vehicle. You should head to an auto repair shop as soon as you spot an oil leak, as it could result in major engine damage, should you not take care of it.

Coolant Leak

Coolant, also known as antifreeze, is generally a bright green color and has a sweet smell to it. This fluid helps to regulate engine temperature. If it begins to leak if you could face overheating issues which will result in massive engine damage. Be sure to get to a repair shop if you catch any liquid dripping from your vehicle.

Transmission Fluid

If you notice a reddish fluid dripping from underneath the engine area, you've likely just discovered a transmission fluid leak. Transmission fluid helps ensure smooth shifting and provides holding power in the transmission. Always keep up with transmission maintenance in order to prevent transmission fluid leaks.

Differential Fluid

Differential fluid looks and feels very similar to transmission fluid. The best way to tell the difference is to figure out where the leak is coming from. If the leak is near the back of the vehicle it is more likely going to be differential fluid, not transmission fluid.
